Bad news for crypto holders in EU ❌
The EU Parliament has voted today to impose new regulatory measures that would essentially prohibit anonymous cryptocurrency transactions.
The ECON and LIBE committees voted that anyone who purchases crypto from an exchange would have to submit personal identity information if the transaction is more than 1,000 euros using ‘unhosted’ cryptocurrency wallets.
Unhosted wallets mean non-custodial wallets, which do not rely on third parties. eg: MetaMask, WalletConnect, or hardware wallets like Ledger and Trezor.
In simple words, ‘not your keys, not your crypto.’ has just been made more difficult in the EU.
I’m not sure how this would really stop anything and would clearly mean p2p crypto trading will become the norm in EU countries.
Or would create a black market. Or maybe EU residents would use centralized exchanges outside EU, e.g. in Switzerland or US? 🤔
